FAQ

  • What does crushing do?

It lowers the digital resolution of the audio for that gritty, retro-console crunch.

  • Can I make a retro robot voice?

Yes — crush a voiceover for a chiptune robot or game-NPC voice.

  • What does it sound best on?

Short sounds and beats make the punchiest, game-ready effects.

Supported Formats

Input: audio/video. Output: MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A, MP4.

What the 8-bit effect does

It reduces the digital resolution of the audio, adding the crunchy, lo-res grit of old video-game consoles and chiptune. The more you crush it, the more retro and robotic it gets.

Subtle grit or full chiptune

A light setting adds character and edge while keeping the audio clear. A heavy setting goes full 8-bit for game sound effects and glitchy production.

Tips

  • Short sounds and beats make punchy, game-ready effects.
  • Try it on an AI voiceover for a retro robot or NPC voice.
  • Combine with Bass Boost for a heavier, dirtier tone.

How the 8-bit / bitcrush effect is made

No AI — just a short, classic DSP chain applied to your audio. Here's the recipe:

Bit depthsamples are crushed to about 4 bits for that crunchy quantized grit
Sample ratethe rate is decimated (~×5), adding aliasing for a retro console feel
Tonea lowpass at 6.5 kHz tames the harshest fizz
